Dorothy Hershkowitz. . .  brings over 30 years of experience and passion to each class she teaches and each new piece she performs and choreographs. She offers Intermediate Modern to adult students at Boston Ballet's Metro West Studio. She has taught at numerous colleges and studios in the Boston and New York areas.  During her 24 year appointment at Wellesley College she taught many forms of dance including ballet, choreography and world dance. In recent years she taught choreography at Boston College.

Dorothy's choreography is well known for its integration of theatrical and musical elements and has received wide critical acclaim. She has been honored to receive support through two Choreography Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, several Massachusetts Artist Foundation Grants, and multiple Massachusetts Cultural Council Awards.  Recent local and state awards have supported her evening-length dance/video collaborations with video artist Lynn Bikofsky. She has often collaborated with acclaimed and nationally respected local composers Billy Novick and Stan Strickland.

Ms. Hershkowitz has set her work on students and professionals here and nationally and through Artist-in-residence programs at such institutions as the University of Illinois, the University of Wisconsin, San Jose State University, and Middlebury College, among others. She was the associate director and company member of the Harvard Summer Dance Center in its founding year. She served on the Massachusetts Council for the Arts and worked for many years for the Newton Cultural Council.

Dorothy's dynamic classes reflect and synthesize the influence of her professional training in New York City with Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and members of the Limon Company. She also studied with Viola Farber, Dan Wagoner, and ballet teachers Maria Nevelska and Maggie Black. She performed with members of the Graham and Limon companies, with the Merry-Go-Rounders Dance Theatre, and in off-Broadway productions. She is honored to have performed with Bill Evans, Debby Jowitt, Takako Asakawa and Dance Theatre Workshop in NYC. She has also choreographed and performed with Dance Collective, Harvard Dance Center, and with many local Boston companies. Her own company's evening-length works have been seen in local and national venues for over thirty years.

Classes combine natural and athletic movements with classical discipline in center work, on the floor, at the barre, and in sweeping phrases across the floor. New movement vocabulary introduced throughout the class culminates in short dances accompanied by eclectic recorded music. Dorothy's love of folk and world dance forms has also been integrated into her teaching style.  Classes are designed to expand each student's technical abilities, expressive sensibilities and thorough enjoyment of moving in space -- alone and with others.
